Jacob
D. Massaquoi,II., is a human rights
advocate and one of the Founders of African Refuge, a community
based project of the International Trauma Studies Program with the
mission to address the needs of African immigrants and refugees
through family and youth support programs.
Since its inception in early 2003, the organization continues to
provide a range of activities for youth and families such as access
to vital information on entitlement programs, use of computers for
internet research, help with college applications and school projects,
supportive counseling and support meetings for families and youths.
Other activities and services offered include community organizing,
recreational programs, the arts, and referral to appropriate care
partners and/or programs to assist individual youth and family with
problems.
Before he was forced out of his native country Liberia, Jacob Massaquoi
served as the Country Representative of the International Association
for Volunteer Effort (IAVE)-Liberia, he was responsible for the
coordination of activities surrounding the United Nation’s
International Year of Volunteers (IYV2001) and follow up activities
in Liberia (08/00-03/02).
He co-founded Free Teens Liberia, Inc. a non-profit volunteer organization
with the mission to promote human rights and alleviate the plight
of disadvantaged children and orphans, combat the spread of HIV/AIDS,
teenage pregnancy as well as the incident of drugs and substance
abuse among teenagers, 03/1999-03/02.
Jacob Massaquoi has been engaged in volunteer activities gear towards
promoting the welfare of children and youths both in his native
country and in the United States, He served as a volunteer youth
mentor for Joint Action for Community Services (JACS), a national
volunteer organization engaged in helping graduate of Job Corp integrate
into mean stream society, 03/03-09/05, Brooklyn, New York.
Mr. Massaquoi,II holds a Bachelors in Human Resource Management
from the American InterContinental University (AIU Online) April,
2006, and he is persuading a graduate studies in Organizational
Psychology and Development at the same institution. He is a member
of several pro-human rights and democracy organizations including
the International Association for Volunteer Effort.
